Uncontrolled Index Term Indonesian folk tales, children’s literature, feminist critique, women objectification

Summary, etc. Abstract It has long been believed that Indonesian folk tales contain the local wisdoms of the many ethnic groups in the country that they are believed to be valuable reading materials for Indonesian children. As a result, these folk tales have been rewritten and reprinted in its variety of versions, most of them are complemented with colorful illustrations to entice the young readers. In reality, not all folk tales circulating in the society contain valuable norms and appropriate content to be consumed by children. Some revitalized folk tales by Sanggar Tumpal published in 2005, among others, show the imbalance representation of women as most of the women characters are portrayed as the object of the male characters or perceived through male perspectives. The objective of this paper is to reveal the objectification practices toward women characters in three Indonesian Folk Tales by Sanggar Tumpal: Si Leungli, Jaka Tarub, and Sangkuriang. The analysis will use the objectification theories of Nussbaum (1995) and Langton (2009), and will cover the texts as well as the illustrations. The results of the analysis show that the women characters in these three stories have been consistently objectified which might lead to the formulation of an understanding that men have the right to impose their will on women.
